What is the difference between a surface with a reflectivity of 75% versus one with 97%?
The obvious, but incorrect, answer is 22% (97 – 75 = 22). In reality, the total irradiance in closed systems becomes exponential as it approaches 100%.
For example, light shining on a 75% reflective surface loses 25% of its energy every time it strikes the surface. But a reflectivity of 97% loses just 3% per reflection.
So the surface irradiance of a material with 97% reflectivity is eight times greater than one with 75%. This is how Porex Virtek enhances the effectiveness of UVC disinfection systems.
